Sabbath

Is it for us today?

The purpose of this article is to state a good portion of Scriptures dealing with the Sabbath in hopes that you will reread and reexamine all of the Scriptures dealing with the Sabbath in prayer. May the Spirit reveal to you YHVH's will. The reading of this article is hardly enough to demonstrate the truth of this subject by itself.

Genesis 2:2-3 And on the seventh day Elohim finished his work which he had made; amd he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And Elohim blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it; because that in it he rested from all his work which Elohim had created and made.

Exodus 16:23-30 v.23 And he said unto them, This is that which YHVH hath spoken, Tomorrow is a solemn rest, a holy sabbath unto YHVH.......

Contrary to popular opinion the Sabbath was already in place BEFORE the Ten Commandments. YHVH had made the seventh day holy back in the creation account. Now He reveals to Israel that He would have them to rest as well. Could it be that those prior to the Ten Commandments kept the Sabbath as well? Since it is not stated for or against I will keep this only to the FACT that in YHVH there was already a Sabbath. I believe that it is what our Creator thinks that matters not what people do or don't do.

Exodus 20:8-11 v.8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

This is further spoken about later in this article.

Isaiah 56:2-7 Also the foreigners that join themselves to YHVH, to minister unto him, and to love the name of YHVH, to be his servants, every one that keeps the sabbath from profaning it, and holds fast my covenant;

The covenant was made to Israel but as you can see a foreigner was allowed to join in to that covenant. But as you will see in the article "New Covenant" (Coming Soon) there was to be one Torah for both the Israelites and the foreigner that joined themselves to Israel. Pay attention to this, the foreigner was to join themselves to Israel and follow the covenant given them.

According to Romans the Gentiles are grafted into Israel not vice-versa.

Romans 11:17-24 But if some of the branches were broken off, and thou, being a wild olive, was grafted in among them, and did become partaker with them of the root of the fatness of the olive tree;

Notice how Scriptures (not doctrine, traditions, man, a preacher) defines the "New Covenant".

Hebrews 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel After those days, saith the Master; I will put my laws (what laws could he be speaking of? It must be the Torah as this a quote from Jeremiah. Also there are no "New Laws", there are magnified laws and additional commandments but not new laws that have replaced the old.)into their mind, And on their heart also will I write them: And I will be to them a Elohim And they shall be to me a people:

It is the same way today, the new (renewed) covenant went to the Jews first (look up how many times that's mentioned. Notice how the good news went to Israel first and then the Apostles went out to the Gentiles. Just as in the days of old, the Israelites were given Torah and then others were allowed in as they were to be an example to all nations.

Today we Gentiles join into this renewed covenant given Israel (a covenant that says nothing about getting rid of Torah) and so there becomes one Torah for both Jew and Gentile. Therefore there is no longer Jew and Gentile, instead we have become one in this better covenant of YHVH.

Isaiah 66:22-24 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith YHVH, so shall your seed and your name remain.  And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one SABBATH to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith YHVH And they shall go forth, and look upon the dead bodies of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

Enough said, this is indeed a prophetic statement of that which is to come. For those who believe Ezekiel 44-48 deals with the Millennium Kingdom then there as well those it mention Sabbaths.

Acts 13:42 and when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.

Wow, what happen to a Sunday morning message? Why did the Gentiles ask about the next Sabbath so many years after Yeshua's death if they understood that it was abolished? Why did Paul not say anything about coming Sunday morning?

Acts 13:44 And the next sabbath almost the whole city was gathered [that included Gentiles]together to hear the word of Elohim.

Acts 13:48 And as the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of Elohim: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed

Acts 15:1-21

The chapter deals with certain Hebrews making a huge deal about Gentiles needing to be circumcised in order to gain Salvation. Notice here how the issue of the Sabbath never comes up? If the Sabbath had been made void surely there would have been controversy between the believing Hebrews and the believing Gentile Sunday keepers. If they made a fuss about circumcision they would not have left out the Sabbath, especially the Pharisees who accused Yeshua of breaking it when he actually did not.

Acts 16:13 And on the SABBATH day WE went forth outside the gate by a river side, where prayer was (wont) custom to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women that were were come together.

Wow, why have a customary Sabbath prayer on the river side when it had been done away with?

Acts 17:2 and Paul, as his custom was, went in unto them, and for three sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

Acts 18:4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded Jews and Gentiles.

Col. 2:16-17 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of a feast day or a new moon or a sabbath day: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body (is) of Messiah.

If you will notice, most of the versions have the word "is" in parenthesis or italicized. The rendering should be: Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of a feast day or a new moon or a sabbath day (which are a shadow of things to come) but the body of Messiah. Read it and bypass the parenthesis and see how it reads. You will also note that Paul specifically states that the sabbath/new moon ARE (not was) a shadow of things TO COME (not things that have come to pass). Compare that with Isaiah 66:22-24.

Even if one refuses to drop the "is" out of the text there is still NOTHING here dealing with disregarding the Sabbath. This verse by itself cannot determine rather or not the Sabbath is to be kept. Paul could have easily been telling the people not to allow the Pharisees or even pagans to judge them in respect of keeping those things. It is understood better when you read it in the corrected rendering.

Rom. 14:5-6 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let each man be fully assured in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord: and he that eateth, eateth unto the Lord, for he giveth Elohim thanks; and he that eateth not, unto the Lord he eateth not, and giveth Elohim thanks.

We must pay attention to the context of verses before turning into whatever interpretation we demand. Verse one of this same deals with not receiving a brother to doubtful disputations or you could say debatable issues, questionable things, etc. The Scriptures make it clear that there is nothing debatable about the Sabbath. It is very clear that it is the day YHVH commanded to be observe. Only man, tradition, and Babylon have made this issue confusing and highly debated. Another thing is, esteeming everyday has nothing to do with resting according to a commandment. You could indeed esteem everyday or just one day. However you CANNOT rest in accordance to the Sabbath everyday.

I hope this listing of Scriptures will help you to go back and research the issue again. Do it this time without the tradition, emotions, attachment to a organization or leader to cloud your judgment. May the Spirit guide you to see the truths of what is stated in the Scriptures by themselves. In no wise do I believe that the truth of this issue has come from this article alone. Only the Spirit can reveal the truth to you. I could go on forever and ever but if your heart/mind is not willing to subject yourself to the Spirit (not my article) so that you can see what is being said and not said then nothing will change your mind. I only present these things to sow seed enough that will hopefully get you to restudy the issue for yourself in prayer. Click on Sabbath 2 to go to the next article.
